Granate attack in Bangladesh killed Kibria / Real bd hot News

Besides Tajuddin, Hannan and Zandal, the other Huji men believed to have carried out the blast are Hannan's younger brother Mohibullah Ovi, Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul, Naim Ahmed Arif alias Limu, Badrul Alam Mizan, Mizanur Rahman Mithu, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mufti Abdul Hye and Ahsanullah Kajal.

Of the 11, Kajal died in India in 2006; Mithu, Shafiqur, Hye and Tajuddin are still at large and the rest six are in jail.

IO Rafiqul is convinced that Mithu and Mizan threw the grenade at Kibria's rally in Baidder Bazar under Habiganj sadar upazila.

Besides the former finance minister, the blast killed his nephew Shah Manzurul Huda and local AL leaders Abdur Rahim, Abul Hossain and Siddique Ali.

The IO said, "If we had Tajuddin in our custody, we could know for sure who helped him procure the grenades.

"We are almost done with our investigation. Even if we cannot arrest Tajuddin, we would still get to the source of the grenades. Our officers have been working hard along that line.”

He said they had lately learned who helped Tajuddin flee the country. The information could help make a major headway.

The investigators are also analysing the role of the local and central administration and police officials.

The IO has already questioned the district's the then deputy commissioner and superintendent of police.

Kibria family have all along been suspecting involvement of some high-profile leaders of the then ruling alliance.

Asma Kibria, wife of the slain AL veteran, believes the Huji men played a mere assassin's role. She maintains that the most crucial thing is to find out the persons who ordered the killing.

Talking to The Daily Star, she said the way the then ruling BNP tried to cover it up suggests some of its influential leaders had been involved in the killing.

She also alleged the BNP government had tried to mislead the investigation.

On different occasions after the AL-led grand alliance took office in January last year, Asma said if they do not get justice during its rule it would mean another tragedy for her family.

She said she doesn't know whom to turn to if AL, the party which her husband held so dear, fails to bring the killers to book.

In response to Kibria family's demands, the investigators are at last looking into the role and statements the then ruling alliance leaders played and made before and after the killing.

They are seeing things from fresh angles now. For instance, an investigator questions why the authorities did not send a chopper to bring Kibria to Dhaka. The lawmaker was transported by road and died a few hours later.

He also wonders why Emdadul Haq, the then DC of Habiganj, did not have to face disciplinary action when the SP of the district and the officer-in-charge of Sadar police station were suspended for negligence.

Abdul Mazid Khan MP, the complainant, said the IO recently told him that they have identified around a dozen persons responsible for the killing and were now trying to track down the masterminds.

The investigators in the August 21 blast case too find it hard to unearth the source of the grenades used in the attack that left 23 AL leaders dead and scores injured in 2004.
